Derm: Melanin a Sunscreen ‘Alternative’

A Manchester University dermatology professor told the British press this week that melanin produced in the skin by a new experimental drug without UV exposure could be “an alternative to commercial sunscreens” — a statement that seems to implicitly acknowledge that suntans protect against sunburn and that tanned skin is more resistant to skin cancer.

An implant that tans the skin for up to three months without the risk of cancer has been created by scientists.
The size of a grain of rice, it oozes a drug that changes the skin’s colour by stimulating melanin production while also acting as a sunblock against UV rays.

A University of Wisconsin study suggests that UV exposure, totally independent of vitamin D production, suppresses an animal model of multiple sclerosis — another indication that UV exposure’s positive influence extends well beyond vitamin D production.
