Sunscreen use may lead to vitamin D deficiency

(HealthDay) — Using the amount and sun protection factor (SPF) of sunscreen recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) is associated with little or no vitamin D production, suggesting that regular sunscreen use may lead to vitamin D deficiency, according to research published online April 18 in the British Journal of Dermatology.

Widespread media reports Wednesday that a 6-year-old girl was allowed to tan in a New Jersey tanning salon were based on the 6-year-old’s statements to a school official that her mother took her to a tanning salon, but no evidence that the girl was ever actually allowed to tan in the salon.
