Sunlamps Used to Lower Blood Pressure in Highly Publicized Dermatology Study

Joint Canadian Tanning Association (JCTA): Dermatology group’s research promotes a balanced message about UV exposure. Dr Richard Weller presented his research just last week on how Ultraviolet (UV) light from sunlamps can help lower blood pressure.

Sunlamps can help lower blood pressure

Kelowna, BC (PRWEB) May 16, 2013

Sunlamp exposure lowered blood pressure in a University of Edinburgh study lead by dermatologist Dr. Richard Weller. When volunteers were exposed to ultraviolet light a compound called nitric oxide is released in the blood vessels and helps to lower blood pressure. Dr. Richard Weller presented these findings from his new study last Friday at the International Investigative Dermatology conference in Edinburgh, one of the world’s largest dermatology conventions.

“We suspect that the benefits to heart health of sunlight will outweigh the risk of skin cancer, Dr Weller stated. The work we have done provides a mechanism that might account for this, and also explains why dietary vitamin D supplements alone will not be able to compensate for lack of sunlight,” Weller said in a press statement last week. Dr. Weller also warned his team still needs to look at the relative risks of heart disease and skin cancer in people who have received different amounts of sun exposure.

The JCTA is pleased to see dermatology research calling for a balanced approach to UV exposure. “Here’s a dermatology researcher calling for balance – which is what the professional sunbed industry has always stood for,” JCTA President Doug McNabb said. “Weller’s study used sunlamps — maybe that’s a step in helping more people realize that balance is the key and that there is a place for those who choose sunbeds.”

Millions of Canadians turn to sunbeds every year as a surrogate for sun exposure in Canada’s light-deprived environment. JCTA members promote sunburn prevention and full education about the effects of UV exposure as a responsible approach. Please Tan Responsibly

About the Joint Canadian Tanning Association:

The Joint Canadian Tanning Association (JCTA) is a national non-profit organization created to increase understanding of the professional tanning industry’s scientifically supported position that regular moderate ultra-violet exposure from sunshine or sunbed in a non-burning fashion is part of a responsible lifestyle that recognizes both the inherent benefits and the manageable risks associated with ultraviolet light exposure.
