JCTA agrees with Ontario Government on banning Self-serve tanning.

The Joint Canadian Tanning Association (JCTA), the representative voice for Canada’s professional salon sector, is pleased that Ontario has become the first province in Canada to restrict self-serve (coin-op, slide card, client controlled) tanning facilities as a component of Bill 30.

“The banning of self-serve tanning facilities in Ontario is a great step forward for the health of its citizens and for our industry. Tanning needs to be controlled by someone who is knowledgeable in the administration of UV light; anything less risks overexposing consumers,” said Steven Gilroy, Executive Director of the JCTA.

With third reading of Bill 30 on October 9th, the JCTA is eager to assist government in communicating to the salon sector to ensure that all owner-operators are aware of new obligations under Bill 30 and they’re quickly enacted.

“The JCTA, as a positive partner to government is ready to assist in communicating with our sector to ensure everyone knows the rules of the road and follows them. However, we see this as more than simply an opportunity to simply educate our members around new rules, we see it as the beginning of an escalating conversation about the importance of professional control which will ensure that an adult who chooses to tan can do so in a setting controlled by someone who cares as much about their skin as the client does,” said Gilroy.

Moving forward the JCTA will continue to work with insurance companies, governments and stakeholders to foster professionalism within the salon sector.

“You should never get into a tanning bed that is not controlled by a professional who takes the time to properly skin type you and operates the machinery within manufacturer’s guidelines.
