Vitamin D, Sunlight, and Sperm: Digging Into the Science
A meta-analysis published in the journal Biomedicines reviewed several observational studies that all pointed to a significant link between vitamin D levels—which are mainly produced in humans through sunlight exposure—and sperm characteristics. These studies also suggested a connection between higher blood testosterone levels and higher vitamin D levels.
Researchers found that men with normal vitamin D levels had sperm that were more motile and, overall, their semen quality was better compared to men who were lacking in vitamin D. In other words: sun-deprived gents, your sperm is not winning any swim races.
Prompted by these findings, researchers ran clinical trials to see if giving vitamin D supplements to men who were deficient would impact fertility. Unfortunately, the results did not live up to hopes—the vitamin D treatment had no significant effect on testosterone levels or the hormones known to play a role in fertility. However, the good news? Vitamin D supplementation did lead to improved sperm motility.
Should Men Rush for Vitamin D Supplements?
The findings from this meta-analysis suggest that sunlight exposure, via its impact on vitamin D production, genuinely affects male fertility. Still, there’s no strong scientific evidence justifying the use of vitamin D supplements to improve fertility in men with hormonal issues or abnormal semen (whether the sperm are sluggish, sparse, or oddly shaped). As the study’s authors put it:
“Further clinical studies are needed to clarify the relationship between vitamin D and male fertility, as well as its components.”
Vitamin D and Female Fertility: What Do We Know?
Vitamin D receptors are present in the ovaries, ovarian follicles, the endometrium (the lining of the uterus), and the placenta (the crucial organ that connects the mom’s and fetus’s blood supplies). Multiple studies (mostly in animals, to be fair) have shown that vitamin D could be involved in:
- Egg development and maturation
- Implantation of the embryo
- Functioning of the endometrium and placenta
Yet, while the effects are well demonstrated in vitro and in animal models, clinical trials in humans provide mixed results. One meta-analysis pooling 11 studies and 2,700 women concluded that women with normal vitamin D levels had more live births compared to those who were deficient. Even though the researchers believe the link is real, they stressed the need for intervention studies to determine if vitamin D truly causes improvements in fertility.
Another review, published in 2023 in the journal Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology, measured the effects of vitamin D supplementation on women having difficulty conceiving. It found an increased pregnancy rate in some women who took vitamin D. However, the rates of embryo implantation, miscarriage, and multiple pregnancies did not differ significantly between those who took the supplements and those who didn’t. The researchers highlighted that the benefits of vitamin D supplementation were seen mostly among women with vitamin D deficiency.
Should You Sunbathe for Baby-Making?
Based on existing scientific data, we can’t claim that basking in the sun will automatically boost your chances of conceiving—so don’t toss your sunscreen just yet. To date, no clinical trial has directly demonstrated this effect. Still, several studies suggest that sunlight, through its role in vitamin D production, could have positive effects on both female and male fertility.
As always, more research is needed. In the meantime, a little sunshine (in moderation) might not just lift your spirits—it could, perhaps, play a small supporting role in the journey to parenthood. Just don’t bank all your baby hopes on a tan!
